After serving as home to scores of children for more than 50 years, Oakland’s
summer camp is feeling its age. The time has come to renew these
facilities so that students for the next 50 years can enjoy this rustic,
camp-like setting for seven weeks every year. The following plans
call for replacement of more than half the summer camp and will make it
easier for residential staff to supervise campers. The new facilities
also will improve ventilation and overall comfort for campers and staff.
-- Phase A New construction: demolition of the original boy’s bathroom and health center and creation of a new two story building which will bridge the Virginian and Ivy (formerly Dixie) dorms and house a new girls bathroom, satellite health center, and, on the second floor, a camp office providing a view of the entire camp grounds and living quarters for the resident director. No more walking outside to get to the bathroom.
-- Replacement of the exteriors of the Ivy and Virginia Dorms
-- Demolition of Southern dorm and girls bathroom
-- Phase B New Construction: Replacement of the Wranglers, Cavaliers, Pony Barn complex and interconnection with the existing boy’s bathroom building
Goal- $145,000
Perhaps you have visited Oakland this past summer, or your child may have attended Oakland's Summer Camp. Then you would have seen the beautiful new and renovated buildings that have enhanced our wonderful summer program! Now the boys have a new spacious building which replaces the old pony barn that housed them since Mrs. Shepherd started the camp. The girls have nice enclosed bathrooms, the nurse has a new first aid station and, most importantly, the new camp office is centrally located and has a view of the whole camp.
We raised over $330,000 towards a $475,000 project. Generous donors “gathered ‘round the flagpole” and enabled us to complete phases one and two this summer, but we still need to raise $145,000 to meet our costs. Please consider a donation and please come visit!
