The Oakland Foundation for Learning Disabilities is an independent, non-profit
organization created by parents and friends of Oakland School to support,
enhance and perpetuate the “Oakland Way,” an educational method
that has enabled students with learning difficulties to reach their full
potential since 1950. The principle goals of the Foundation are to help
ensure that students with learning disabilities or learning differences
will continue to be educated in quality learning environments and that
the opportunity to attend special schools such as Oakland School will be
available to students whose families do not have the financial means to
provide such an education.
The Foundation’s mission is to promote public awareness of the educational and psychological needs of students with learning disabilities, to enhance the skills and competencies of teachers instructing learning disabled students and to perpetuate the outstanding work done at Oakland School. Financial support for the school, which is the initial focus of the Oakland Foundation, will both enable students who could not afford specialized LD education for their children to be able to attend Oakland and to provide resources required for a variety of capital improvement projects at Oakland.
In addition to supporting Oakland School, the foundation intends to promote public awareness of the educational and psychological needs of learning disabled children and to conduct and sponsor education programs designed for teachers, parents and others who serve LD children.
Gifts to Oakland are made through The Oakland Foundation, which administers the following funds:
Annual Scholarship Fund 2007-08 Goal: $125,000
The
Oakland Annual Scholarship Fund enables enrollment by children who would
otherwise be unable to attend Oakland. Approximately
10% of year-round Oakland students benefit from this important fund. While
the bulk of annual funds support student scholarships, these funds also
are used for staff development and special programs for students.
Summer Camp Renewal 2007-8 Goal: $145,000
Built
between 1951 and 1953, Oakland’s rustic summer camp needed refurbishment
and replacement so that students for the next 50 years could benefit from
Oakland’s unique school plus camp experience for six weeks every
year. We are fortunate to have realized this dream, and our 2007campers were
very happy we did! Thanks to two wonderful matching donations, we raised
over $330,00 in less than one year. We hope our supporters continue to
“Gather ’Round the Flagpole” and help us to raise the
remaining $145,000 to meet our costs.
